The monument is a memorial to those who lost their lives in the tragic events at Minamata in Japan. The circular structure, situated below ground, houses a precious urn containing the ashes of the dead. The monument is accessible from outside down a flight of steps and is designed for relatives and friends who wish to pray during the commemoration ceremony. Writing on glass with air, reading signs that tell stories and poetry in Japanese. The light, water and air at Minamata are symbolised in the limpid transparency and weightlessness of Murano glass.
